How to end a lease in writing
Notice periods, last day of tenancy, and documents to pair with a lease termination letter.
Ending a lease works best when the end date and handover plan are in writing. Your original lease agreement usually says how many days of notice you must give - follow that number even if local law adds extra rules.
What the notice should say
- Property address and names of landlord and tenant
- Statement that the lease is ending (not just a rent pause)
- Last day of tenancy and how keys will be returned
- Forwarding address for deposit correspondence
After notice
Schedule a final walk-through and sign a handover protocol. If the deposit is not returned on time, send a deposit return request with bank details.
